A reality read that threw me into the Icelandic life of Heida and her sheep. Revealed was the passion and pain of dealing with 500 sheep in a remote and isolated corner of Iceland. Living alsongside Katla the volcano who occasionally spewed ash and smoke to remind everyone of its notorious presence. The daily chores of running a farm and helping neighbouring farms becomes disrupted as an energy plant make plans to build a huge reservoir that would destroy her farm. Heida becomes an unlikely politican and fights her cause. This is a life honestly told. Her words are shaped by the landscape and informed by her unique experience of living a solitary life as a single woman farmer in a remote place. Her courage, determination and ingenuity is heartwarming. It is a recount of a life lived respectfully on the landscape.
A great read.
