Year 5s have started their Outdoor Learning on Wednesday afternoons. I have linked the OL to Citizenship and PSHE. We walked around the grounds and noted the different areas and the natural materials we could find. Then into small self-chosen groups for a bit of role-play. Using these words – Be safe – Be responsible – Be respectful – the groups chose one or two of these words and had to act out a scenario in a chosen outdoor area.
Each role-play explained their understanding of the words because the point was to understand that rules exist even when we are outside the classroom. Being creative and playful in a group empowered the Year 5s to direct their learning and enjoy a different type of interaction. Having the choice of acting out your scenario to your peers or writing the main points down in an Outdoor Learning book, reinforced the learning and provided a shared context to develop ideas for the next session.
